A man has been identified after being beaten and killed with a shovel by his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend during a dispute in Fresno, according to the Fresno Police Department on Tuesday.

Officers say they responded to a physical disturbance in the area of East Balch Avenue and South Callisch Avenue in Fresno on Monday around 5:50 p.m.

As officers were responding, the received another called and were advised of a stabbing victim on the scene.

Upon arrival, police say they found the victim, 26-year-old Devin McNew on the ground, suffering from severe blunt force trauma and multiple stab wounds. A 26-year-old woman suffering from blunt-force trauma to the head was also located and a third individual 26-year-old Jonathan Navarro, was contacted on the scene.

According to investigators, Navarro had a large laceration to his wrist, which was later determined to have been self-inflicted.

All three people were transported to a local hospital for treatment. McNew succumbed to his injuries and the woman along with Navarro were treated for their injuries and expected to survive.

Detectives say it was determined Navarro and the woman had recently ended their 10-year relationship. She and her new boyfriend, McNew, had driven to the location to drop off property belonging to Navarro. While doing so, Navarron and McNew began to fight.

During the fight, investigators say Navarro stabbed McNew multiple times and struck both McNew and the woman several times with a large garden shovel.

Once Navarro is discharged from the hospital, police say he will be booked into the Fresno County Jail on suspicion of homicide and attempted homicide, along with other charges.
