In response to a homicide investigation, Harris County Sheriff Homicide Investigators were called to the Alys Crossing Apartments at 20510 Cypress Plaza Parkway on Monday, July 29, 2024, around 4:00 PM. At apartment #14107, a fatal shooting occurred, prompting Harris County Constable Precinct 5 deputies and emergency medical services to respond to an ongoing appeal for assistance.
Incident Details
The investigation revealed that after an argument and physical struggle, Kerry Cunningham shot 39-year-old Clifton Lee Johnson. Upon arrival, deputies and emergency medical personnel found Cunningham attempting to treat Johnson, who had been shot in the head. Johnson was quickly transported in serious condition to Memorial Hermann Downtown Hospital via life flight.
Investigators conducted in-depth interviews, reviewed documentation, and inspected security camera footage from the apartment. They discovered that the woman living in the apartment had moved there to avoid her divorce from Cunningham. On the day of the incident, Cunningham arrived while the woman and Johnson were inside, kicking the door and attempting to pry it open with a screwdriver. Once inside, Cunningham confronted Johnson in the bedroom. Security footage showed Cunningham with a revolver in his waistband. After a verbal exchange, a physical struggle ensued, ending with Cunningham shooting Johnson in the face.
Cunningham was taken into custody at the scene. After being interviewed by detectives, he was charged with Capital Murder. He is currently held in the Harris County jail.
