Scott Masters, Beloved Video Coach, Passes Away at 46

Renowned video coach for the United States Men’s National Team, Scott Masters, tragically died in an accident on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. He was 46. A cherished figure in the world of sports, particularly hockey, Masters’ sudden passing has left an immeasurable void among family, friends, and colleagues.

Born Scott Reynolds on September 20, 1977, in Denver, Colorado, Masters grew up in nearby Arvada where his passion for sports ignited. His athletic prowess shone at Arvada West High School, especially in hockey and golf. Early involvement in local baseball and hockey teams laid the groundwork for a lifelong dedication to sports.

Masters continued his athletic pursuits at Colorado State University, joining the CSU Club Hockey team. Balancing academics with his love for the game, he demonstrated leadership and commitment that would define his career.

His professional journey began in media relations at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst, serving as a springboard to a groundbreaking role with the NHL’s Florida Panthers. As their first video coach, Masters, then the youngest in the NHL, revolutionized the position. His innovative strategies quickly garnered league-wide recognition.

A dedicated coach, Masters volunteered his expertise with the University of Denver hockey team during an NHL strike. This commitment led to coaching positions with the St. Louis Blues and Colorado Avalanche. His career trajectory continued to soar as a professional scout for the Montreal Canadiens before culminating in his role with the United States Men’s National Team. As video coach for the 2013 gold medal-winning team at the Ice Hockey World Championship in Stockholm, Sweden, Masters cemented his legacy.

Beyond his professional achievements, Masters was a devoted father to Amari (15) and Ben (13). Survived by parents Bob and Kathy Masters, brother Tyler, nephew Gabriel, and numerous extended family members, he was a loving and supportive figure.

Tributes have poured in from the sports world, celebrating Masters’ infectious enthusiasm, innovative coaching, and unwavering dedication. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 5th, at 1 PM at Crown Hill Cemetery, Staging Area C. A Celebration of Life will follow on Tuesday, August 6th, from 4-8 PM at Ralston’s Crossing Event Center, Arvada.
