Maureen Danehy Cox, a Beloved Community Leader
Maureen Danehy Cox, a cherished member of the New Haven community, passed away unexpectedly due to complications from ALS. Devoted to her family, profession, and community, Maureen leaves an enduring legacy of kindness, intelligence, and unwavering dedication.
A loving mother to Michael D. Cox and devoted wife of 43 years to Robert B. Cox, Maureen’s warmth and humor touched countless lives. Born in New Haven on May 9, 1954, she was one of ten children raised by Benjamin and Rosalie Jones Danehy.
Educated at Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden and Our Lady of Victory in West Haven, Maureen excelled academically. She graduated magna cum laude from the College of the Holy Cross, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and earned honors from the University of Connecticut School of Law.
A trailblazer in the legal field, Maureen was a partner at Carmody, Torrance, Sandak & Hennessey and a renowned litigator. Recognized as one of Connecticut’s top women in litigation, she shattered glass ceilings by becoming the first female president of both the Connecticut Defense Lawyers Association and a statewide chapter.
Her accomplishments extend beyond the courtroom. Maureen served as an Attorney Trial Referee, was a James W. Cooper Fellow, and received numerous awards for her leadership and advocacy. Committed to mentoring women lawyers, she was honored as one of Connecticut’s top female attorneys.
Maureen’s impact on her family, friends, and colleagues is immeasurable. Her memory will be cherished for generations to come.
